Christmas Pet Portraits: Gift Ideas, Prices and Order-By Dates (2026)
A Christmas pet portrait is your dog or cat painted into an old-fashioned holiday scene, then made into a gift such as an ornament, a pack of Christmas cards, an art print or a wood photo block. At Shiner Photo you can see your pet painted free in about a minute, prices start at $19 for a 4K download and $24 for an ornament, and physical orders placed by December 15 arrive before Christmas.

What is a Christmas pet portrait?
It is a portrait of your pet in a Christmas setting instead of a plain background. The best ones borrow from classic art, so the result looks like a painting that has hung in a family home for a hundred years, not a cartoon with a Santa hat pasted on.
On our Christmas pet portrait page there are 20 styles, inspired by classic Christmas paintings and Victorian Christmas cards. Think a snowy sleigh ride, a fireside Christmas Eve, a Dickens-era street, Santa's workshop, and a few where your dog sits for a visit with Santa himself.
Here is how it works:
- Upload a photo of your dog or cat. You can add up to three photos to paint two or three pets together, or include yourself.
- Pick a Christmas style.
- See it painted in about a minute. The preview is free and no credit card is needed.
- Order the format you want, or try another style first.
To be clear about what you are buying: these are AI-painted portraits, printed and checked by hand. If you are weighing that against a commission from a painter, I wrote an honest comparison of AI vs hand-painted pet portraits, including when a painter is the better choice.
Christmas pet portrait gift ideas by recipient
For a dog mom or dog dad
Go big and put it on the wall. A professional art print on archival paper in 11x14 ($79) or 16x20 ($119) makes the dog the star of the living room. If they already have a gallery wall, the painted photo block is the easier gift: it needs no frame, a magnet in the back snaps onto a thumbtack so it sits flat on the wall, and a wooden stand lets it sit on a shelf instead.
For a cat lover
Every Christmas style works for cats too. Cat people tend to love the dignified, old-master look, so pick a style where the cat is posed like the head of the household. The 4 inch ornament ($24) is an easy add-on or a stocking gift, and it pairs well with a print for the main present.
For grandparents
Grandparents want something they can show off. The Christmas Set ($99) covers it in one box: an 8x10 art print for the wall, 25 matching Christmas cards with envelopes, and a 4 inch ornament with a red satin ribbon. If the grandkids are in the photo too, you can paint them in with the dog.
For the whole family's Christmas card
If getting everyone to sit still for a photo card sounds like a nightmare, paint the dog instead. The cards are folded 5x7 on heavy matte card stock, with your portrait and greeting on the front, the inside left blank for your own note, and a white envelope with each. Packs are 10 for $29, 25 for $49 or 50 for $79.
For someone whose pet has passed
A Christmas portrait can be a gentle way to keep a pet who died part of the holiday. An ornament is often the right size of gift: it comes out every December and goes back on the tree. Use the clearest photo you have, then look at the preview slowly before ordering. If the markings or eyes are not quite right, ask for a change or tap "Sharpen it to your photo" for a free repaint. If it does not look like them, do not buy it.

A few details worth knowing. I print the art prints myself on a Canon PRO-1000 and check each one by hand, and they come in standard sizes that fit store-bought frames. The photo block is printed into 3/4 inch Baltic birch and made in the USA. The prints, blocks, cards and the Christmas Set all include the 4K download of your portrait, so you can share it too. Prices can change, so check the page for current prices.

How to take a photo that paints well
The photo matters more than the style. A sharp, close photo gives a portrait that looks like your pet. A blurry, far-away one gives a portrait of a dog that looks a bit like your dog.
- Get down to their eye level. Kneel or sit on the floor. Photos taken from above make heads look big and legs look short.
- Both eyes showing, facing the camera. A treat or a squeaky toy held just above the lens helps.
- Go close. Fill most of the frame with your pet, and do not zoom in digitally afterward.
- Use soft daylight. Near a window works well. Skip the flash, which flattens fur and turns eyes glassy.
- Keep the face clear. No filters, costumes, sunglasses or hands covering the face. The painting adds the Christmas part.
- If you are in it, a clear photo of your face works best, and a selfie is fine.
If you only have older photos, try the sharpest one anyway. The preview is free, so you will know in a minute whether it works.
When to order for Christmas
- December 15: last day to order ornaments, cards, prints, photo blocks or the Christmas Set for delivery before Christmas.
- Cards: aim for early December so you have time to write and mail them before the holiday rush.
- Any time, even Christmas Eve: the 4K download is emailed within minutes of checkout, which makes it a good last-minute gift. Print it at home or send it with a note that the framed version is coming.
Every order is printed and packed by hand, so earlier is always calmer. You can make the free preview today and order when you are ready. If you want a portrait for any time of year rather than a Christmas scene, the everyday styles are on our custom pet portrait page.

Can I see the portrait before I pay?
Yes. Upload a photo, pick a Christmas style and your painted preview is ready in about a minute. It is free and no credit card is needed. You only pay if you order.
Can you paint two pets, or me with my dog?
Yes. Add up to three photos to paint two or three pets together. You can also add a photo of yourself, or one of you together, and every Christmas style works either way.
Are these portraits hand-painted?
No. They are AI-painted from your photo in the style you choose, then printed and checked by hand before shipping. That is why the preview is free and fast. A hand-painted commission costs more and usually takes weeks.
What photo works best for a Christmas pet portrait?
A close, sharp photo taken at your pet's eye level, facing the camera with both eyes showing, in soft daylight. Avoid flash, filters, costumes and far-away or blurry shots.
